Details: The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was passed with bipartisan support in both chambers following months of negotiations.
The final agreement excluded some of the most contentious issues, such as provisions related to abortion and Pentagon efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the military.
At the same time, a provision included at the insistence of Speaker Mike Johnson prohibits the military healthcare system Tricare from covering gender dysphoria treatment.
Biden criticized this provision in a statement outlining his objections to the bill.
The law allocates $850 billion for the Department of Defense's base budget and $33.5 billion for nuclear weapons programs overseen by the Department of Energy.
The Senate Armed Services Committee also approved an additional $25 billion for missile defense, shipbuilding, and drone combat technologies.
It is worth noting that the adopted version of the law does not include provisions for lend-lease for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General anticipates pressure from the future U.S. President Donald Trump regarding defense spending.
