Moldovan President Sandu has taken the oath for her second term in office.

On December 24, Moldova's President Maia Sandu took the oath of office for her second presidential term.

Details: After taking the oath, Sandu also delivered a speech in which she noted that society has managed to maintain peace and protect its democracy despite the crises of recent years and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Direct quote from Sandu: "I can tell you, hand on heart: I worked with dedication during my first term, and I will continue with even greater will and energy. After 4 years, I can modestly say that together we have accomplished what had never been done in 30 years of independence."

Details: She added that there is still much work ahead, calling for national mobilization and further development of the country.

"I urge you to move forward with confidence. Do not forget what our Moldova means – heritage, optimism, struggle, development, organization, will, ambitions," Sandu stated.

Background:

  • Sandu was re-elected in early November for a second term with a lead of over 10 percentage points over her opponent, the pro-Russian socialist candidate Alexander Stoianoglo.
  • Sandu won primarily due to strong support from the diaspora. The vote count within Moldova confirmed that without overseas voters, Stoianoglo would have won.
  • Subsequent polls indicated that the majority of Moldovan citizens believe that the elections were conducted with violations and were neither free nor fair.
