Details: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are completing their exit from the energy system controlled by Russia. Currently, these countries operate within the IPS/UPS framework, the frequency of which is regulated by Russia.
Verbatim: "On February 8, 2025, the energy systems of the Baltic states will disconnect from the IPS/UPS system and will begin joint testing of their energy systems in island mode. Synchronization with the frequency of continental Europe will take place on February 9."
Synchronizing with the energy system of continental Europe will not only enhance our energy security but also ensure effective connectivity with EU markets. This is a significant step towards integrating our systems into the unified rules of Europe."
Background:
- In June 2019, in Brussels, the leaders of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and the European Commission approved a work schedule for disconnecting the electricity transmission lines (ETLs) of the Baltic states from the post-Soviet system and synchronizing them with Western Europe.
- Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia currently operate in synchronous mode within the so-called ring of the post-Soviet energy system BRELL and rely on the dispatch center in Moscow and the electricity grids of Russia.
