Details: In the letter signed by U.S. House of Representatives members, Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Steve Cohen, Biden is urged to "grant Poland the authority to intercept and neutralize missiles over Ukraine, particularly those threatening to intrude into Polish airspace."
The request is based on Poland's desire to utilize its air defense systems over Ukrainian airspace to protect itself from Russian missiles and assist Ukraine in its defense.
"Despite Russia's ongoing escalation of hybrid warfare—violations of airspace, attacks on critical infrastructure, and attempts to destabilize democratic institutions—we have not firmly confronted these threats, allowing Russia to wage war against the Alliance with minimal consequences," write Wilson and Cohen.
According to them, in this context, Poland's request to intercept and destroy missiles over Ukraine is "necessary and urgent as a mechanism to support Ukraine and guarantee the protection of NATO's frontiers."
Recall:
- Last month, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated that Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine are "obligated" to shoot down Russian missiles before they enter their airspace.
- At the same time, the Polish government distanced itself from such calls.
- The U.S. has also refused to discuss shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine, explaining that it cannot be compared to Israel.
