My impressions from meetings in the USA suggest that Washington is currently divided into two groups.
One group consists of traditional Republicans and liberals who are uncertain about how to handle Trump. The other group is closely aligned with Trump and aims to dismantle and reboot the system. Naturally, there are various factions within these groups; for instance, one faction supports Ukraine, while another despises it.
Liberal and anti-Trump Republicans fear that Trump might abandon Ukraine to quickly "resolve" the conflict, similar to the Afghan scenario. However, many neutrals and classic conservatives believe that Trump wants to maintain his image among voters, and therefore will not allow Ukraine to fall like Afghanistan did.
On the contrary, there are those who think that the new administration is in a state of panic over this. On the other hand, discussions surrounding Trump mention a chance for him to win the Nobel Peace Prize if he can settle the wars in Israel and Ukraine. Interestingly, all the Uber drivers are currently saying about Ukraine, "Trump will come and restore order."
What a strange country America is.
However, one can make some judgments based on appointments. Trump is nominating individuals with clear anti-Russian views to key international positions, although some keep their opinions hidden.
There are also those who believe that Trump will manage to accomplish something in the short window of opportunity of 6-12 months, after which he will get bogged down in internal struggles and the system of checks and balances in the US. We’ll see what he can achieve and who is right. Meanwhile, we have our own tasks to attend to.
