The Russian theater in Estonia has decided to remove the word "Russian" from its title.

The change of name has been on the agenda since last year, due to the aggressive invasion that Russia is conducting in Ukraine.

In the spring of 2024, several meetings were held at the theater focused on updating the repertoire. There were rumors that the ensemble was suggested to remove works by Russian and Soviet playwrights from the repertoire.

The theater's director and artistic leader, Dmitry Petrenko, emphasize that the theater takes a very clear stance regarding Russia's war in Ukraine.

At the same time, the theater director, Anne-Li Pääv, states that the name change, like the repertoire update, has arisen more for artistic reasons and explains that the theater faces two tasks. Firstly, to spark interest among its audience in Estonian culture, and secondly, to attract Estonian-speaking viewers.
