Deni Villeneuve, the director of "Dune," does not wish to direct "Star Wars." He stated this during the podcast "The Town," according to UNN citing Variety.

In a podcast interview for "The Town," Deni Villeneuve reminisced about his favorite childhood films, including "Star Wars." The director of "Dune" mentioned that making such a film is not his dream, as the franchise effectively ended with "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. However, this does not imply that Deni Villeneuve is uninterested in collaborating with Lucasfilm.
"The problem is that everything went off the rails in 1983 with 'Return of the Jedi,'" he continued. "It's a long story. I was 15 years old, and my best friend and I wanted to take a taxi to Los Angeles and talk to George Lucas—we were so mad!"
According to the director, after "Return of the Jedi," the "Star Wars" franchise crystallized into its own mythology, which is very dogmatic and resembles an instruction manual, lacking any surprises. Therefore, he does not dream of directing "Star Wars."
Thanks to "Dune," which has brought the director great acclaim, many now consider Deni Villeneuve an icon of the sci-fi genre. He is currently developing the third "Dune" film, which will be based on Frank Herbert's second novel, "Dune: Messiah."
"If I make a third one, which is in the writing process, it won't resemble a trilogy," the director said. "It's strange to say this, but if I go back there, it will do something that feels different and has its own identity."
“Dune: Part Two” will premiere on HBO in NovemberJuly 19, 2024, 1:19 PM • 11,340 views
