“If Trump were willing to hand Ukraine over to Putin, he wouldn’t need 100 days. He could have sat down with him on the 21st, talked, and pressured Zelensky: ‘Agree, I’ve spoken with Putin, he’s determined. Either agree, or I’ll stop supplying weapons right now.’ For that, you don’t need 100 days. But if you want to take a position that’s not very comfortable for Putin, then you need to delay,” explains Abbas Gallyamov.

Because for now, he notes, the Russians are on the offensive, ambition plays a role, and although they write that the Russian economy will collapse by autumn, it’s already cracking, the Russian industry is on the verge of collapse, and while they will be throwing ashes on their heads, that’s not enough; it needs to become obvious even to Putin himself.

On one hand, the program guest points out, Trump makes some statements that are complimentary towards Putin; for instance, he recently said that NATO is at the doorstep, so Putin’s concerns are understandable. On the other hand, despite such gestures, Trump is in no hurry; he’s waiting for Putin to be ripe for peace.

“If you start negotiating with him immediately and offer him an unfavorable deal, well, you’ll just provoke a conflict, and Trump doesn’t want to quarrel with him. He wants to enter history as the person who did what no one else could. No one could end this war, but he could. He doesn’t want to find himself in the same position as Biden, who argues, fights, while the war continues,” concludes Abbas Gallyamov.
