“It was a week when dictators just lost all restraint. During this week, Putin spoke more than Lukashenko did in the entire past year. It's very difficult to listen to them because you realize they are almost always lying. Listening to them is repulsive because they are old, intellectually limited people. It’s not like talking to artificial intelligence. I would rather converse with ChatGPT than listen to Lukashenko,” notes Mikhail Sheitelman.

However, he observes that Lukashenko revealed an intriguing fact: it turns out that after the exercises, Putin was withdrawing his troops to the south of Belarus, possibly provoked, and he decided to direct them towards Kyiv without asking anyone. According to the expert, Lukashenko decided to play the fool, and it turns out that any troops can freely move back and forth across the Belarusian state border as they wish.

“This is a person trying to evade responsibility for the attack on Ukraine. Belarus will have to pay reparations just like Russia, but in a much smaller amount, incomparably smaller, because Belarus did not deploy its occupation forces,” adds Mikhail Sheitelman.

As he explains, the BBC stated that this comment from Lukashenko shows how much the Kremlin influences Belarus, but they incorrectly interviewed him. The expert clarifies that, if we assume that Lukashenko's version is true, then they should have asked why, after the defeat near Kyiv and Chernihiv, the Russian army re-entered Belarusian territory, since Putin could withdraw his troops from exercises as he pleased, rather than bringing them in. In that case, he emphasizes, Lukashenko is caught, as it would mean that Russian troops invaded Belarus from Ukrainian territory, and all his lies would fall apart.
