According to the expert, the adversary is currently rushing to implement the plans for their 2024 military campaign, particularly aiming to capture Pokrovsk, which is the main strike direction. He explains that the Russians are trying to establish a foothold for an assault on the city, and it's crucial to hold this position; otherwise, the entire Southern Donbass could fall.

“The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, recognizing the significance of Pokrovsk and Shevchenko, has redeployed its available operational-strategic reserves there, including several brigades,” reports Oleg Starikov.

The expert notes that fierce fighting is currently taking place around Shevchenko, with counterattacks occurring that are not seen along the entire line of contact; these battles are happening within the brigades. Based on the outcomes, he states, we will see what happens next—either a Russian offensive on the southern flank of Pokrovsk or a retreat to positions from which they won't be able to advance to the southern outskirts of the city.

“That’s why we have what is referred to as the so-called December battle. Historically, there have been battles like this, such as the Battle of Pokrovsk, the Battle of Shevchenko. This is currently a strategic battle, but it operates at the operational-tactical level, or perhaps even at the operational level, which could lead to changes in the operational direction,” explains Oleg Starikov.
