The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, in collaboration with international partners, is developing a restoration plan for the New Safe Confinement Arch at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant following the attack by a Russian drone. This was announced by the head of the agency, Svitlana Hrynchuk.
“Today, the Cabinet allocated over 1.5 billion UAH to support the safe condition of the Chernobyl shelter. This is 139 million more than in 2024. We continue to work together with international partners and donors. The EBRD has confirmed its support in ensuring the safety of the plant," the minister noted.
Currently, technical consultations regarding the next steps for restoring the structure are ongoing, and an operational headquarters is active on-site. Hrynchuk, along with specialists from the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone, inspected the aftermath of the strike.
“The situation is under control. The radiation background has not changed since February 14. This has also been confirmed by IAEA experts who conducted their own measurements,” she assured.
However, attacks on critical infrastructure continue, and the risks to nuclear safety are increasing.
“The arch was built to shield the world from radiation, not from war. What Russia has done is yet another dangerous precedent. Together with the international community, we must find a solution to prevent this,” Hrynchuk emphasized.
The mitigation of the consequences of the strike is ongoing, with specialists working around the clock.
