Subscribe“It’s easier for Trump to pressure us, slightly harder or more difficult to pressure Putin, but it can be done. However, if, for instance, he pressures Zelensky and Europe opposes it, then Trump’s maneuverability will be somewhat limited,” claims Vadim Karasev.
Nonetheless, he notes, Europe’s position in future peace negotiations won’t be as strong, the expert points out, because it isn’t offering anything substantial, and the introduction of a peacekeeping contingent is still a raw idea. In other words, he explains, Europe believes that everyone will come to an agreement, a freeze will occur, Putin will gain his territories, and European troops will be present in the remaining areas of Ukraine to prevent the war from reigniting.
“But why negotiate like that, anticipating a new war? You know, like the second coming of Christ, they will be expecting a new war in 3-4 years. What’s the point of such a deal? Everyone will leave from here. Or will you keep them at the border, detaining them all? If you’re going to negotiate, it should be in a way that completely excludes the possibility of war resuming. That’s a very important point. It should be a lasting peace, well, for a generation. Not eternal in the sense of forever, but at least for, say, 50 years,” explains Vadim Karasev.
After all, he warns, Ukraine won’t be able to develop otherwise, as it needs investors to come in, trade to happen, and people to return. Moreover, the expert adds, creating a security zone stretching 1000 km from Sumy to Mykolaiv with British observation posts is a rather dubious idea.
