As the expert explains, while Trump may simply want to achieve a ceasefire, a freeze, or a truce as quickly as possible, Ukraine and Russia are not satisfied with this, as both sides have different visions not only for ending the war and its outcomes but also for the post-war arrangement of Ukraine and all of Eastern Europe.

“He (i.e., Trump) met with Zelensky, albeit briefly, at the end of September 2024 in Trump Tower in New York before the elections, and then in Paris during the opening of Notre-Dame. However, he has not met with Putin, who himself admitted that they hadn't spoken for four years. But after January 20, there will likely be some summit between Putin and Trump, where everything will be decided,” notes Vadim Karasev.

Additionally, he reflects, the question is whether the West is willing to resume relations with Russia at all after the war, whether this will lead to a new Cold War, or if it will result in a frozen conflict during which both sides prepare for the resumption of hostilities.

“The fact that there is a framework for negotiations and that the discussion is no longer about war, but rather about how to end it, is a fact. But the question within this framework is what the picture will look like. This is currently the most important aspect—what colors or charcoal will be used, what outlines or a complete portrait, whether it will be a still life or a landscape, and so on. This will be the main focus, it seems to me, at the end of this year and the beginning of 2025. The key point is what the picture will be rather than just the framework,” asserts Vadim Karasev.
